Standing Poses: Standing poses are usually the most strenuous for beginners. They are often done first in a yoga class to "build heat" and get you warmed up. In vinyasa/flow style yoga, standing poses are strung together to form long sequences. In hatha classes, the standing poses may be worked on individually with rest between each pose.

Description of an early form of yoga called nirodhayoga (yoga of cessation) is contained in the Mokshadharma section of the 12th chapter (Shanti Parva) of the Mahabharata. The verses of the section are dated to c. 300–200 BCE. Nirodhayoga emphasizes progressive withdrawal from the contents of empirical consciousness such as thoughts, sensations etc. until purusha (Self) is realized. Terms like vichara (subtle reflection), viveka (discrimination) and others which are similar to Patanjali's terminology are mentioned, but not described. There is no uniform goal of yoga mentioned in the Mahabharata. Separation of self from matter, perceiving Brahman everywhere, entering into Brahman etc. are all described as goals of yoga. Samkhya and yoga are conflated together and some verses describe them as being identical. Mokshadharma also describes an early practice of elemental meditation.

Never, ever have I seen yoga practiced or explained in quite the unique way that you do it – or I guess I should say that I have never connected to any practice the way that I feel I’ve connected in following yours. It’s amazing, and refreshing and I love the freedom that you bring to the mat….I know yoga is about the listening to your body and breathe and making it your own, but I’ve always felt a little confined by the instructor and trying to do it exactly the way I see it done. So, thank you for reminding me to practice yoga for myself and really make it a personal experience. It’s so refreshing and I’m so excited to get back to it!!
