For a recent study published this month in the journal Experimental Physiology, scientists compared three groups of people aged 40-60: some practiced Bikram yoga in a heated (105-degree-Fahrenheit) room, others did the same yoga class in a regular-temperature room, and the last group did no exercise at all. Compared to the non-exercisers, both groups of yogis saw similar benefits on their heart — meaning the extra heat may not have provided much of a benefit.

Part of it comes down to simply practicing kindness. Honor the individual awesomeness of each and every student who shows up to class. Instead of trying to “fix” what’s “wrong” with your students, shift your focus to genuinely celebrating their strengths (offering specific positive feedback, for example); using neutral language (refraining from terms like “wrong,” “right,” “more/less advanced,” “more/less flexible/strong,” “good alignment,” and “bad alignment”); and avoiding critical tones when offering corrections or suggestions.
