How to do it: On your mat, get into a stance similar to that of a push up, but place your forearms together and down into the mat. Keep your body still, straight, and elevated about 3-4 inches from the mat. Think about drawing the abdomen into the lower back. Don’t sink into your joints, but lift up and suspend yourself out of gravity. Hold this pose, or come out of it in between breaths if it’s too difficult to hold.

Yogic breathing (3 minutes): Seated in a chair, lying on the floor, or sitting cross-legged, breathe in three distinct phases. First, inhale and fill your lower belly with air, to your maximum capacity. Then exhale, pulling the belly back gently to allow as much air as possible to escape from the lungs. Do this a few times. Then inhale again, filling your belly with air and allowing the breath to expand your rib cage as well. Exhale, squeezing all the air out of your rib cage until it’s empty. Then bring your breath all the way up into your collarbones … and slowly exhale. “Don’t try to force yourself to get the breath all the way into the sternum,” notes Cristie. “Straining doesn’t help; let it be organic.”

Stretch your right foot out (90 degrees) while keeping the leg closer to the torso. Keep your feet pressed against the ground and balance your weight equally on both feet. Inhale and as you exhale bend your right arm and make it touch the ground while your left arm goes up. Keep your waist straight. Ensure that your body is bent sideways and not forward or backwards. Stretch as much as you can while taking long, deep breaths. Repeat on the other side.
